Scooter Accident Statistics

Scooters, bicycles, and motorcycles have become a popular alternative form of transportation. After all, they are lightweight, inexpensive, and simple to use. However, riding a scooter on the road is more dangerous for the user.

Accidents with electric scooters can result in severe dislocations, bone fractures, lung contusions, soft-tissue injuries, and a splenic laceration.

Between September 1, 2017, and August 1, 2018, about 249 emergency room visits were associated with standing electric scooters, according to medical records from two UCLA hospitals in Los Angeles and Santa Monica. The bulk of these patients was either hit by autos or fell from their electric scooters.

The usage of scooters is governed by different legislation in each state. In December 2018, the City of Los Angeles issued a One-Year Dockless On-Demand Personal Mobility Permit.

As the year-long trial comes to a close, local officials will analyze the data to determine the impact of electric scooters on city traffic and safety. Currently, the project restricts the number of scooters available to each company to 3,000. (with an additional 2,500 allowed in specified Disadvantaged Communities).
