Truck Accident Statistics

The occupants in a truck have more protection than those in a car or other smaller vehicles during a collision. That’s why it makes sense that persons in compact automobiles are more likely to be seriously hurt or killed in such accidents. Even a single truck accident may have devastating consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, heavy truck accidents killed 4,965 people in the United States in 2020. With 5,032 deaths in 2019, the following year saw a decline of 5%. Nevertheless, 71% of all US traffic deaths can be directly attributed to truck accidents.

In 2020, heavy trucks made up 8.9 percent of all vehicles involved in fatal accidents across the United States. At least ninety people were killed in truck-car collisions in California in 2015. Fifty or more deaths were attributed to trucks in only two other states that year: Texas and Florida.
