Rear-End Crash Statistics

When one vehicle collides with the vehicle in front of it, this is referred to as a rear-end collision. Because the front driver cannot always prevent a collision, a rear-end collision is often (but not always) the driver’s fault in the rear position.

In California, rear-end collisions are among the most common car accidents. In 2011, there were 118,029 drivers involved in rear-end collisions that resulted in injuries and 405 drivers involved in rear-end collisions that resulted in fatalities, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

A rear-end collision is virtually always the driver’s fault in the rear position because rear-end collisions are frequently caused by following too closely, driving too quickly, having worn-out brakes or tires, or simply not paying attention. These are factors that the back driver, not the front driver, can influence.

Distracted driving, tailgating, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated are major causes of rear-end collisions.
