Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

A multi-vehicle accident is defined as a collision involving many vehicles. A “pileup,” as this form of traffic calamity is sometimes referred to, involves at least six cars.

When weather conditions such as fog, rain, or snow reduce road visibility, multi-vehicle incidents are more likely to occur. As a result, drivers must be extra cautious and vigilant. Drivers may be unaware of how hazardous the roadways are.

According to a recent NHTSA study, over 13,000 persons perished in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger cars each year, accounting for almost 40% of all motor vehicle fatalities.

As a result, in many multi-car collisions, drivers have very little time to avoid colliding with automobiles in front of them. Because they’re panicked, most drivers swerve out of their lane, pound on the brakes, and crash. Vehicles that swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid a collision often cause an even worse chain reaction and a larger pileup. One of the deadliest forms of accidents is a multi-car collision.
