Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics

The most common cause of death and serious injury in the United States is a collision with a motor vehicle. Approximately two million people are injured in car accidents each year. In the state of California alone, there are over 200,000 of them. Riverside County, California’s fourth most populous region, has more than 2 million residents and is ranked as one of the most dangerous places to drive.

Motor vehicle accidents on Riverside’s surface streets, including Jurupa Avenue, Wells Avenue, Pierce Street, and freeways like the 91 and 215, caused 2,119 injuries and deaths in 2017.

In a side-swipe collision, two vehicles traveling in the same direction come together and strike each other. For example, on an onramp to an interstate highway, this type of accident is common because of the merging of two lanes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration refers to side-swipe collisions as “angled collisions.” Because of this, side-swipe accidents are rarely the subject of news reports featuring dramatic rescues. In contrast to drunk driving cases, they do not generate the same level of outrage.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, around 2,500 side-swipes result in fatal injuries each year in the United States.
