A woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 178 in east Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon, March 8, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at approximately 3:00 p.m. near Union Avenue.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a 61-year-old man driving a 2007 Ford Mustang was heading eastbound on Highway 178. As he changed lanes from the number one to the number two lane, a female pedestrian crossed northbound from the south shoulder, outside of a marked crosswalk.
The driver was unable to take evasive action and struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. CHP confirmed that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors for the driver, but it remains unclear if they contributed to the pedestrian’s actions.
The eastbound number two and three lanes of Highway 178 were closed for about two hours for the investigation, which remains ongoing.

What To Do After A Pedestrian Accident In Bakersfield, CA
If you’re involved in a pedestrian accident, it’s important to stay as calm as possible, if you’re able. Remaining composed will help you take the necessary steps to protect your health and your right to compensation. Here are the key steps to follow:
- Check for injuries and dial 911. Do not leave the accident scene, but move to a safe place. If moving would worsen your injuries, ask for help and stay motionless. Let yourself be treated by the paramedics.
- Take note of the contact details of the driver and any witnesses, if possible. This will be very helpful to the police when they file their official report.
- If you can, take pictures and videos of the accident scene, the car that was involved, and your injuries.
- Talk to the authorities about the situation, but don’t make any assumptions, apologize, or take responsibility.
- Get medical help at a hospital right away, and pay close attention to what your doctor says.
- Nothing should be shared on social media. Adjusters for insurance companies could try to devalue your claim and reduce the amount they have to pay you.
- Call Arash Law at (888) 488-1391. We can gather evidence, such as CCTV footage from nearby businesses, and ensure every aspect of your case is handled effectively. Our reliable pedestrian accident lawyers can help you recover financial compensation for all of your losses.
