Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

One of the most common causes of unexpected death in California is a car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, there were 3,304 fatal car accidents in California. In 2018, over 100,000 people were injured in California, with 48 dying.

A collision involving more than two vehicles is considered a multi-vehicle collision. A “chain-reaction” collision is a common cause of these types of accidents.

These collisions are prevalent on highways, where hundreds of vehicles travel at high speeds side by side. As a result, many drivers approaching an accident find it impossible to stop at a safe distance, resulting in a collision with other vehicles ahead.

More than 13,000 persons were killed in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger vehicles, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle accidents each year, according to a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research.
