Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to statistics provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the number of lives lost in vehicular collisions decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016. In contrast, deaths among pedestrians rose by 27% during the same time frame. These statistics suggest that walking in the street in the United States is growing increasingly dangerous.

There were 5,977 pedestrian fatalities in the United States in 2016, according to the latest available data. Up to 88 individuals were losing their lives per minute by the end of that year. In 2017, over 137,000 pedestrians were hurt in auto-related incidents and needed medical attention during the entire year.

In 2012, 893 pedestrians were killed and almost 14,000 were injured in California alone. If the numbers are to be believed, this is the leading cause of injury to pedestrians in the Golden State.
