The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Madera County that sent four people to the hospital and forced the closure of a highway on Tuesday, March 15.

According to CHP officers, a sedan driver was driving north on Highway 145 when he veered off the road, collided with a guard rail, and bounced back into the southbound lane, slamming into an oncoming van.

The sedan was split in half as a result of the collision. The vehicle was partially submerged in the creek.

The sedan’s driver and his female passenger both sustained serious injuries.

They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officials say the van was carrying six family members. Two of them had major injuries and were taken to the hospital.

A baby and a child in the van were not injured, but two others complained of pain.

The crash remains under investigation.

A section of Highway 145 was closed for about an hour, but it has since reopened.
