Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

A multi-vehicle accident is simply a collision involving multiple vehicles. When six or more cars are involved, the traffic accident is referred to as a “pile-up.”

When weather conditions such as fog, rain, or snow reduce road visibility, multi-vehicle accidents are more likely to occur. As a result, drivers must exercise utmost caution and alertness on the road.

According to a recent NHTSA study, over 13,000 people die each year in multi-vehicle accidents involving passenger vehicles, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle fatalities.

Drivers in many multi-car collisions may not have much time to avoid colliding with vehicles in front of them. Most terrified drivers hit the brakes too late, causing them to drift into other lanes and skid.
