DUI Crash Statistics

People who drive after drinking are considerably more likely to cause an accident than sober drivers. Drunk driving incidents are generally more serious and result in more severe injuries than other types of car accidents because their reaction times are hindered, and their judgment is impaired.

Intoxicated drivers put innocent people — and themselves — in grave danger. While California and the United States have made significant success in reducing drinking and driving, there is still a long way to go.

Every day, over 30 people in the United States die due to drunk driving accidents. Drunk driving is responsible for around 29 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities in the United States. Sixty-one percent of these drivers have a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of.08 or greater.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 10,000 individuals are killed in DUI accidents yearly (NHTSA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drugs and alcohol are implicated in around 18% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents.
