Helicopter Crash Statistics

Helicopters require the same level of expertise as airplanes to assure the pilot’s safety and its passengers in the air.

Because of their complexity, helicopters can only be flown by highly qualified pilots who have completed a helicopter flying training program and obtained the necessary certificates and licenses.

According to the NTSB, helicopters have a greater crash rate than airplanes. General aircraft have a crash rate of 7.28 per 100,000 hours of flight time. 9.84 per 100,000 hours for helicopters.

In 2015, the FAA reported 121 helicopter accidents in the United States, 17 fatal. One hundred and twenty-seven fatalities were attributed to helicopter accidents in the United States during 2016.

In what ways are helicoids so hazardous? That they are frequently employed in potentially hazardous and unpredictable circumstances is one of the reasons. There are several sites where helicopters can’t land or take off because they don’t have a runway or air traffic controllers to monitor their flight routes.
