Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A pedestrian accident is one of the most deadly on the road. This is partly because pedestrians are more at risk of traffic-related injuries and deaths than other road users. In the event of an accident, they have no protection.

Approximately 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives in the United States in 2017. This means that death happens in the United States approximately every 88 minutes. Non-fatal collision-related injuries accounted for an estimated 137,000 emergency room visits for pedestrians in 2017.

Some of the most dangerous roads in the country can be found in California. Death rates in California are 25 percent higher than those in other states, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). There were 893 pedestrian deaths and 14,000 injuries in California alone in 2018.

Every year, 1,000 pedestrians and bicyclists in San Diego are critically injured in traffic collisions. San Diego had the highest number of pedestrian deaths in nine years in 2018, with more than 100 people killed. Fifteen of them were hit-and-run incidents.
