[03-20-2023] Car Thief Caused Three-Car Crash in Historic South-Central, Three InjuredThree people were injured after a stolen vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle crash in Los Angeles on Monday night, March 20, 2023.

Reports indicated that the collision transpired around 11:30 p.m. at East Washington Boulevard and South Central Avenue.

According to authorities, a man was accused by his mother of stealing her car on Sunday. Later that evening, around 7:10 p.m., the woman called the police and told them she saw the car in a parking lot on the 2300 block of Wall Street.

Officers approached the red four-door sedan, thinking it was empty, but the suspect was inside. He drove toward an officer who jumped out of the way.

Hours later, the driver was involved in a three-car crash, leaving him critically injured. He was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a hospital. Both drivers from the other cars only sustained minor injuries.

The suspect’s vehicle was mounting the sidewalk and coming to rest outside the fast-food restaurant Tacos Galivan. As firefighters worked to free him, the car’s hood was crumpled against a pole.

The driver was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly driving at an officer. Lopez said he was also suspected of a separate, unrelated robbery.

Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

The NHTSA estimates that more than 5.2 million car accidents occurred in the United States in 2020. In these collisions, fewer than 1% (35,766) resulted in fatalities, while 30% (1.6 million) caused injuries.

Trends indicate that fatal collisions increased by 6.8% between 2019 and 2020, resulting in 1.34 deaths per 100 million cars driven. From 2019 to 2020, the injury rate decreased by 6.0 percent to 79 injuries per 100 million vehicle miles.

In traffic accidents, 67% of victims were drivers, with 24% being passengers, 4% being motorcycle riders, 3% being pedestrians, and 2% being pedal cyclists.

Multiple-vehicle collisions occur when three or more vehicles collide for various reasons. Up to six cars may be trapped in wreckage following an accident.

Unlike car accidents, it is common for multi-vehicle collisions to result in fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage. Having poor situational awareness or losing control can injure those around you. Accidents of this nature are more common in general.
