Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Motorcyclists are responsible for 11% of all road incidents in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). There were 82,000 motorcycle injuries and 4,985 motorcycle deaths in 2018.

This figure is not unexpected, given that motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to be wounded or killed in a car accident than passengers in enclosed vehicles.

Helmets can help avoid major head injuries. Helmets are 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities. The rest of their bodies, however, may still be vulnerable.

Unfortunately, motorcycle riders in California are not safe. California has one of the largest registered motorcycle populations in the country. There are over 800,000 registered motorcycles in California. In 2017, there were 16,505 motorcycle accidents on California roads, with 15,527 people injured and 541 people killed.

Motorcycle accidents are frequently caused by distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, inclement weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to obey traffic laws.
