[03-28-2023] Juvenile Passenger Seriously Injured After DUI Driver Crashed into Caltrans TruckA juvenile passenger was seriously injured after a drunk driver crashed into a Caltrans truck in Shasta County early Tuesday morning, March 28, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the DUI crash occurred shortly after midnight on the northbound Interstate 5 Freeway at the Fawndale exit, 10 miles north of Redding.

The driver was reportedly driving a Tesla with the juvenile passenger at high speed when it rear-ended a Caltrans attenuator truck set up to protect the roadside workers performing chain control screening at that time.

Both the driver and the juvenile passenger sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital in unknown conditions. There were no other recorded injuries.

The driver was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment. No other information on their identity was available.

I-5’s northbound lanes were shut down following the crash. It was later reopened before 1:00 a.m.
