A 31-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured in a collision with a sport utility vehicle in Roseville Tuesday last month, March 29, 2022.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision happened approximately 5:32 p.m. in the intersection of Olipant and Rosecrans streets.
According to Sgt. David Gibson, a 56-year-old man driving northbound in a white 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in the 1700 block of Rosecrans made a left turn in front of the motorcyclist on a gray 2016 Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM at 3000 Oliphant and Rosecrans and struck him.
The driver of the Mitsubishi drove away and was pursued by a witness, who notified police about the hit-and-run.
Officers arrived and arrested the driver at Plum and Keats streets, Gibson said.
The victim suffered fractured ribs, a fractured left arm, a fractured left leg and other internal injuries, which Gibson said are life-threatening.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accidents are especially devastating because the rider is in greater danger than the other driver. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to catastrophic and fatal injuries than other road users because of their heightened sensitivity to collisions.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 16 times more likely than passengers in enclosed vehicles to be injured or killed in an accident.
Eleven percent of all traffic accidents in the United States involve motorcycles. Almost 5,000 people were killed, and 82,000 were injured on motorcycles in the United States in 2018.
Helmets have been proven to save lives by protecting riders from life-threatening injuries and keeping them safe and sound. Nearly half of all motorcycle deaths can be prevented by wearing a helmet, according to the Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
While protecting your head, the area below the collarbone is also a treasure trove. There are several pieces of motorcycle safety equipment that can help you avoid serious injuries.
