Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics

According to a recent analysis, there are increasingly more hit-and-run fatalities. In 2020, hit-and-run incidents contributed to a total of 24% of pedestrian fatalities.

Compared to other states, California has the highest fatalities and serious injuries to pedestrians. In 2012, over 14,000 pedestrian injuries and approximately 893 fatalities occurred in California.

The phrase “hit-and-run” is used to describe collisions between vehicles followed by drivers who flee the scene unaided (including those who flee on foot). Additionally, because victims of hit-and-run accidents are frequently delayed or do not receive medical attention, which results in suffering and social and financial costs, the outcomes can be worsened.

Failure to yield to pedestrians or abrupt braking are common causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

In order to avoid collisions, it is advised that pedestrians use sidewalks whenever possible, abstain from using drugs and alcohol, and proceed with caution when crossing parking lots or driveways.

What To Do Following an Accident

If you’re in a car accident, pull over immediately. The law punishes hit-and-run drivers severely. When a collision results in a fatality or severe injury, and police are not nearby, the appropriate authorities must be notified immediately. If the driver is incapacitated in any way, any passenger in the vehicle is required to call the police or CHP.

If there are no casualties, you can safely pull over to the side of the road. Authorities may impound parked cars if they are not removed from the road.
