Fatal Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics

A recent study indicates that the number of fatalities caused by hit-and-runs is rising. Approximately 24% of pedestrians were killed in hit-and-run accidents in 2020.

California has the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. It is estimated that over 893 pedestrians were killed, and nearly 14,000 were injured in California in 2012.

A hit-and-run collision occurs when one vehicle collides with another and then flees the scene without stopping to help (this includes drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the pain and suffering and the social and financial costs of injury accidents, hit-and-runs can worsen the situation since victims may not receive medical treatment.

Pedestrians have been involved in increasing accidents and fatalities in recent years. The number of deaths associated with this tragedy has been frighteningly high for some time.

One of the leading causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries is failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too sharply. Pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, remain vigilant, and use caution when crossing parking lots or driveways to reduce their risk of injury.
