A US Navy serviceman was killed in a crash on Interstate 10 in Beaumont involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer on Friday afternoon, April 1, 2022.

[04-01-2022] Riverside County, CA - US Navy Serviceman Killed in Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in BeaumontAccording to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:40 p.m. on westbound I-10 at Beaumont Avenue.

According to CHP officials, a 2019 Freightliner towing a 53-foot semi-trailer came to a halt due to stopped traffic.

The SUV, driven by a US Navy serviceman, failed to stop and collided with the semi-rear trailer’s end.

Minutes later, Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived at the scene and pronounced the man dead on the spot.

The suspect has only been identified as a 31-year-old North Carolina man from Burgaw.

According to CHP, he was also stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.

CHP officers closed the Nos. 3 and 4 lanes on westbound I-10 to conduct a preliminary investigation and clear the wreckage at the scene.

Because of the resulting traffic jam, a SigAlert was issued at 1:30 p.m.

Traffic moved slowly for several hours until later in the afternoon.

The crash remains under investigation.
