The collision happened just after 10 p.m. Saturday near Whittier Boulevard and Esperanza Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The pedestrian was crossing Esperanza northbound when he was struck by a westbound Ford Fusion, which fled the scene.

The year and color of the Fusion were unknown to the police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving paramedics.
