What to Do After a Car Accident

A car accident can happen at any time, but being ready for it is up to you. In the event of a car accident, having a checklist handy can help you keep calm. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these tips:

  • Stay Calm and do not admit fault. Stay where you are to make sure nobody gets hurt. You should check yourself for injuries before helping others.
  • Get to a Safe Location and wait for the authorities. Any vehicles that are unable to move should be pulled to the side of the road. Please turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights as a safety measure.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and caused no injuries or property damage. The police can take statements, gather evidence, and compile a report about the incident.
  • Exchange Information with all parties involved. Document everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  • Do Not Admit Fault under any circumstances, even to the police. Tell the police officer nothing but the truth about what happened.
  • Seek Medical Attention. Get in touch with your primary care physician or a specialist right away. Injuries may be treated less severely if given prompt medical attention.
  • Report to Your Insurance Company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Speak to Insurance Adjusters. You can communicate with the claims adjuster, but you shouldn’t reveal any more information than is required. Before consulting with a lawyer, you should not give a recorded statement or accept a settlement offer from an insurance company.
  • Create a File. Collect and organize all relevant documents, including the police report, medical bills, information about the other driver, and treatment plans, in a case file.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a seasoned California car accident lawyer.
