Two people were killed while two children were hurt following a major wrong-way collision in Perris on early Sunday morning, April 10, 2022.
The fatal collision transpired at approximately 2:15 a.m. along Highway 74 and Hammack Avenue, just northeast of Lake Elsinore.
A Ford Mustang was traveling on 74 Freeway in the wrong direction and collided head-on with an oncoming Kia Forte.
It’s unclear why the Ford was driving in the opposite lanes. Unfortunately, both drivers were killed in the accident.
Meanwhile, two passengers inside the Kia were seriously injured in the mishap and were immediately taken to an area hospital for treatment. The two passengers were minors.
There is no word whether drugs and alcohol played a role in the crash. The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the case.
Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Statistics
Millions of Americans are injured in car accidents on our nation’s roads every year. Tens of thousands of people are killed in car accidents each year.
Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data shows that there were 33,654 fatal vehicle crashes in 2018, which resulted in 36,560 deaths, according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
This was a case of a wrong-way accident. A wrong-way accident occurs when a car goes against the flow of traffic and collides with another vehicle. This is common on both city streets and highways. On a one-way street, many drivers go the wrong way. Oncoming traffic is too late for other drivers to understand their mistakes when entering a highway ramp into oncoming traffic.
It is estimated that about 355 wrong-way drivers cause fatal car accidents in the United States per year. A wrong-way driving collision is projected to result in 1.34 fatalities per collision.
More and more people are dying in crashes on divided highways, and the tendency has been rising since the data was last evaluated.
If you unexpectedly encounter a wrong-way car coming in your lane, take calm and cautious evasive measures to avoid a head-on accident. If you can safely drive off the road, you may want to do so.
