What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident

Although it may be difficult to do so, what you say and do at the scene of a car accident can have a substantial impact on the result of a claim you submit against the tortfeasor. Follow these guidelines to decrease the risk of doing something that could lower the value of your personal injury claim:

  • As soon as possible, contact the authorities and request that an officer file a report detailing the incident.
  • Document everything from your wounds to the car that hit you, the scene of the accident, any property damage, the weather, the road, and the road conditions.
  • Get photos of the driver’s license, insurance card, and license plate of the person who caused the accident.
  • Identify and collect the contact details of any potential witnesses.
  • Get to a doctor or other healthcare provider ASAP and be sure to detail every area of your body that has been impacted.
  • Document your injuries and recuperation in a notebook, writing down how you’re feeling, what treatments you’re undergoing, and how much it’s costing you.
  • Before consulting with an attorney, you should not negotiate with the insurance company or accept a settlement offer.
  • Avoid discussing your accident on social media, especially if it was really serious.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to data compiled by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the number of people killed in car accidents fell by 14 percent between 2007 and 2016. However, the number of pedestrian fatalities rose by 27% throughout this time frame.

The figures presented here show that it is exceedingly risky to walk along public streets and highways in the United States now and in the foreseeable future.

In 2016, 5,977 people were killed while walking in the United States. About 88 people were losing their lives per minute by the end of that year. About 137,000 pedestrians were wounded in 2017 due to collisions with cars.

More than 55,000 people were injured and 6,516 people lost their lives in pedestrian accidents in the entire country in 2020. Other statistics show that this is the primary reason why pedestrians in California end up in the hospital.
