According to a sheriff’s official, a 9-year-old girl identified as Ava C. was hit by a stray bullet after a store owner shot at alleged shoplifters at the Mall of Victor Valley in Victorville on Tuesday last month, April 12, 2022.
According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials, the deputies were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to the shooting at the mall on the corner of Bear Valley and Amargosa roads.
According to a statement released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department the following morning, Marqel C., a 20-year-old Adelanto resident and co-owner of the mall’s shoe store Sole Addicts, was identified as the suspected shooter and arrested in Nevada a few hours after the incident Tuesday.
According to her family, the injured girl, was with her family getting ready to see the Easter Bunny when gunshots rang out, striking her three times in the arm.
According to the sheriff’s statement, Cockrell was chasing two shoplifters out of his store and didn’t intend to shoot the girl.
According to the department, Cockrell fired multiple shots at the shoplifters.
Cockrell’s shots grazed the 9-year-old female victim instead of the shoplifters.
Meanwhile, employees said deputies inside the mall told businesses to close and employees and visitors to leave.
Deputies evacuated the mall and searched it, but no additional suspects were discovered.
The mall was closed for the rest of the evening, but it reopened to full operations on Wednesday morning.
Cockrell, according to deputies, fled the mall before they arrived. According to the sheriff’s department, he was found and arrested in his car one state over by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
