What To Do Following an Accident

Being hit by a car, especially in a hit-and-run, can cloud one’s judgment and make it hard to think clearly for some time. What you say and do at the accident scene, however, can significantly impact the outcome of your claim against the negligent party. You can protect the value of your personal injury claim by following these guidelines:

  • After an accident, get in touch with the authorities and have an officer fill out an accident report.
  • Document everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  • Find and write down the information of any possible witnesses.
  • Visit a doctor or other healthcare provider immediately, and describe every part of your body that is hurting.
  • Document your injuries and rehabilitation process in a journal, writing down how you’re feeling, what treatments you’re undergoing, and how much it’s costing you.
  • You shouldn’t talk to the insurance company or accept a settlement offer before speaking to a lawyer.
  • Avoid posting on social media, especially about accidents or how they occurred.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a trustworthy California hit-and-run accident lawyer.
Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics

According to recent studies, fatal hit-and-run collisions are happening more frequently. Hit-and-run incidents accounted for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2020.

California has the highest percentage of seriously hurt or killed pedestrians when compared to other states. In 2012, there were more than 14,000 injuries and 893 fatalities among pedestrians in California.

The term “hit-and-run” describes drivers who collide with several other vehicles before escaping the scene. This includes drivers who collide with their vehicles and flee on foot. Due to delays or a lack of medical care, hit-and-run accident victims may experience additional social and financial costs.

Drivers abruptly stopping or refusing to yield to pedestrians are the leading causes of pedestrian accidents.

It is possible to keep pedestrians safe by remaining sober, remaining on designated pedestrian walkways, and exercising extra caution in areas like parking lots and driveways.
