Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident every 85 minutes in the United States in 2019. In 2019, around 6,205 pedestrians were killed in road accidents.

California has some of the country’s highest rates of pedestrian fatalities. The vast majority of these accidents result from inattentive driving, drunk driving, or other types of driver irresponsibility.

Around 1,200 pedestrians were killed in 2017, a fifth more than the previous year. Meanwhile, over 14,000 people were injured.

To avoid getting hit by a car, pedestrians should constantly follow safety guidelines. While there is no guarantee that an accident will not occur, following prescribed safety advice greatly reduces the likelihood of being held liable in an accident if one does occur.
