What to Do After a Car Accident

While you can’t control when a car crash occurs, you can prepare for it. A checklist can help you remain calm and collected after a car accident. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these guidelines:

  • Stay calm and avoid admitting fault. Ensure everyone’s safety by remaining on the scene. Before tending to others, make sure you’re not hurt.
  • Get to a safe location and wait for the authorities. To avoid blocking traffic, disabled vehicles should be moved to the side of the road. Please turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights for safety.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and caused no injuries or property damage. The police can take statements, gather evidence, and compile a report about the incident.
  • Exchange information with all parties involved. Document everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  • Do not admit fault to the police. Give the police officer your honest account of events.
  • Seek medical attention. See a specialist or your primary care physician. Getting medical attention right away can lessen the severity of injuries.
  • Report it to your insurance company. California insurance providers have their deadline for filing an accident report.
  • Contact insurance adjusters. You can talk to the claims adjuster, but you shouldn’t give more details than necessary. Do not accept a settlement offer or give a recorded statement to an insurance company before speaking with a lawyer.
  • Create a file. Gather and file all paperwork related to the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, details about the other driver, and plans for treating any injuries, in a case file.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a trustworthy California car accident lawyer.
