Big Rig Accident Statistics

‘Big-rig’ is the term used for the tractor-trailers and semis with which we share the road. These names are used interchangeably for huge cargo-carrying trucks.

Tractor-trailer accidents are the most dangerous compared to other types of car accidents. The size of big rig trucks is the primary reason for this. Stopping a big rig that’s hauling a lot of weight takes longer.

A semi-truck accident kills one person every 15 minutes in the United States. Approximately 5,000 truckers are murdered each year in the United States’ 500,000 transportation accidents.

About 113 people are killed, and almost 3,000 people are injured every year in truck accidents in California. In California, truck accidents claim the lives of 200 to 300 individuals each year.

More individuals died in semi-truck accidents than ever before between 2009 and 2015. In 2015, 11% of all fatal traffic incidents involved a tractor-trailer.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations state that motorists should maintain a 4-second distance from heavy trucks traveling at less than 40mph. For speeds over 40mph, an additional second is required.
