Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics

During a “head-on collision,” one vehicle’s front end collides with the front of another vehicle. Head-on crashes are among the most hazardous highways, frequently resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that in 2010, over 1,100 Americans died due to injuries originating from head-on car incidents.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, head-on crashes accounted for slightly over 10 percent of all fatal fatalities in the United States in 2018.

Head-on collisions are most commonly caused by a vehicle crossing a centerline or median and colliding with another. Unintentionally or intentionally driving down the wrong side of the road can also result in a head-on accident.

If you detect a driver drifting into your lane or approaching the highway the wrong way, you should ease off the gas and apply the brake pedal, turn to the right of the oncoming vehicle, and, if necessary, drive off the road. Hitting a ditch is preferable to colliding head-on with another car.
