What to Do After a Car Accident

Although you can’t predict car accidents, you can prepare for them. You should always have a checklist for what to do in an accident in your glove box. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these guidelines:

  • Stay calm and avoid admitting fault. Stay at the scene and make sure everyone is safe. First, you should ensure you’re not hurt before checking with anyone.
  • Get to a safe location and wait for the authorities. Please move any disabled vehicles to the side of the road. Please turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights for safety.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and caused no injuries or property damage. The police can take statements, gather evidence, and compile a report about the incident.
  • Exchange information with all parties involved. Document everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  • Do not admit fault to the police. Tell the authorities the truth about what happened.
  • Seek medical attention. Get in touch with your primary care physician or specialist immediately. Injuries can be mitigated if care is sought quickly.
  • Report it to your insurance company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Contact the insurance adjusters. You can talk to the claims adjuster, but you should give only the necessary details.
  • Do not give an insurance company a recorded statement or accept a settlement offer before speaking with an attorney.
  • Create a file. Gather and file all paperwork related to the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, details about the other driver, and plans for treating any injuries, in a case file.
Seek immediate legal counsel from a trusted California car accident attorney.
Reckless Accident Statistics

Each year, reckless driving in the US results in thousands of collisions and hundreds of fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines reckless driving as “willful disregard” for the safety of other road users.

The precise number of people who are killed or injured each year as a direct result of careless driving is probably impossible to determine. However, according to the AAA, between 2003 and 2007, 56% of all traffic accidents were caused by reckless driving.

Annual statistics show that speeding is the main factor contributing to fatal car accidents in the US. American roads experience significant traffic chaos as a result of drunk driving.
