Head-On Collision Statistics

A frontal collision is another term for a head-on collision. These vehicle collisions typically occur when two vehicles traveling in opposing directions collide. They can occur when driving a car, truck, or motorcycle.

Although head-on collisions are uncommon compared to other types of car accidents, statistics show that they are the most dangerous and lethal of all mishaps. According to the Insurance Information Institute, only 2% of all crashes in 2017 were head-on collisions. They did, however, account for more than 10% of fatal crashes.

A vehicle crossing a centerline or median and colliding with another is the most prevalent cause of a head-on collision. Driving on the wrong side of the road can also result in a head-on collision, whether unintentionally or purposely.

If you notice a driver drifting into your lane or approaching the highway incorrectly, you should depress the gas pedal and apply the brake pedal, swerve to the right of the oncoming car, and, if necessary, drive off the road. Hitting a ditch is preferable to hitting another vehicle head-on.
