What to Do Following a Bicycle Accident

Being safe when riding a bicycle is paramount, but the odds are against you – cars outnumber two-wheelers in California. You or a fellow rider may be involved in an accident with a motorist. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath can affect how well you can protect your or your severely injured companion’s rights. Here is a checklist to assist you in maintaining control and preserving essential information:

  • Dial 911 immediately. If you are unable to do so, seek assistance.
  • Wait for the authorities to arrive and file an official report. A police report provides documentation of the incident, including witness information.
  • Leave your bike in the same condition after the collision. The police should observe the accident scene undisturbed.
  • Get the contact details of any witnesses.
  • Seek medical attention immediately and ensure the doctor knows which parts of your body were harmed. Medical records prove that you were hurt and document the extent of your injuries.
  • Photograph any injuries and the state of your bicycle.
  • Never negotiate with the driver of the vehicle, regardless of fault. Collect the driver’s name, insurance information, and the passengers’ names.
  • Before consulting with a lawyer, avoid providing a statement to the insurance company.
Bicycle Accident Statistics

Although bicycle accidents decreased in 2018, close to 800 cyclists were killed nationwide, a 12% increase from 2001.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 712 bikers died in automobile accidents compared to 377 deaths from other causes.

Statistics indicate that California has the highest number of fatal bicycle accidents. The National Bicycle Safety Foundation reported 11,116 injuries and 145 deaths of bicyclists in California in 2017.

There is a constant risk of road hazards posing a threat to riders. Despite the danger, vehicles ride too closely to cyclists and disregard their rights. As a result, accidents and even fatalities may occur.

Because they consistently don’t yield the right of way, drivers frequently slam through stop signs and red lights. Drinking or careless driving could also result in fatal bicycle accidents.
