Train Accident Statistics

Trains are an efficient kind of transportation, whether for commuting or moving goods. Conductors must have the abilities and experience to keep passengers and non-passengers safe when using various types of transportation. They may scrimp on quality or perform other careless activities that cause harm to others.

Approximately 5,800 train-car incidents occur in the United States each year, most occurring near railroad crossings. These tragic events, which occur regularly, resulted in the deaths of 600 people and the injury of 2,300.

It is estimated that more than half of all fatal train accidents occur at crossings with insufficient, inadequately maintained, or non-existent active safety systems. There may be no safeguards at all in some situations.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, more than 1,000 people are injured in railway accidents every year in the United States. Derailments, collisions with other trains or automobiles, and unprotected railroad crossings are just a few of the ways these mishaps occur.

Commuter trains in Southern California, like Metrolink, may be pushed from behind rather than hauled by an engine out in front of the carriages themselves. There is a greater risk of derailment when vehicles are engaged in an accident while being pushed along by their engines.
