What to Do After a Car Accident
You cannot predict car accidents, but you can be ready to respond when it happens to you. Following a collision, having a car accident checklist will help you remain composed and organized. It can offer guidance on what to do and what not to do and the best ways to defend your rights. After a collision, you’re not on your own. Follow these steps:
- Check your body for injuries and remain calm. Make sure everyone is safe and stays on the scene.
- If you can, move the vehicles to the side of the road. Turn on your emergency flashers to stop further collisions. Wait for the authorities to arrive in a safe location.
- Call and make a report of the accident to the police.
- Obtain the name, number, and insurance information of the driver involved in the collision. Take pictures of the vehicle’s license plate and other essential details.
- Even to the police, do not admit fault. Be honest but be mindful of what you say when talking to the officers.
- Visit the hospital or your primary care physician as soon as possible.
- California insurance companies have deadlines for reporting accidents. Call and report the collision immediately by following the agent’s instructions.
- The insurance company for the party who caused your accident may contact you on the same day of the crash. Before consulting a lawyer, avoid taking notes or accepting insurance settlement offers.
