Bicycle Accident Statistics

Many people in the United States turn to bikes to get around or exercise or just for enjoyment. Bicycles on public roads have the same legal rights and responsibilities as vehicles, and they must be treated as such.

Approximately 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents last year, accounting for 2% of all road fatalities.

There are no exceptions to the rule that bicycles are considered vehicles in California. Avoiding collisions means following the same guidelines as those who drive automobiles. They must stop at red lights and ride in a straight line.

According to new data from the NHTSA, from 2016 to 2018, 455 cyclists were killed in traffic incidents in California.

According to CATSIP, there have been an average of 3,400 bicycle accidents per year in Los Angeles County since 2016. A continuous drop in injury rates has been observed across the county during that period, with the highest collision rate recorded in 2016.
