A woman died, and several people were injured after a tragic hit-and-run crash followed by a truck vs. vehicle collision on Interstate 15 on Wednesday evening, May 3, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported around 11:52 p.m. on I-15 before the University Parkway exit in San Bernardino City.
The CHP and San Bernardino County Fire Department initially responded to the hit-and-run crash involving a dark gray Chevrolet Equinox Subcompact SUV with significant damage blocking the middle lane and an unknown hit-and-run vehicle.
The unidentified vehicle struck the SUV, causing it to lose control and crash, coming to rest and blocking the middle lane. While the authorities were investigating the incident, an Amazon 16-wheeler truck traveling at freeway speeds struck the Chevy SUV.
The Chevy was pushed and came to rest on the freeway’s right shoulder. The female driver died on the spot. The total number of people injured remains unknown at this time.
The semi-truck driver stayed at the scene after the collision for questioning.
The investigation into the crash continues.

What to Do After a Truck Accident
You can still protect your right to compensation if you or a loved one got involved in a truck accident. Your efforts can help authorities determine what really caused the accident, and they can also bolster your case if you decide to file a lawsuit for damages. Among these steps are:
- At the scene of the accident, collect as much information as possible. The license plate number and the car’s make, model, and color may be discernible, depending on your confidence level.
- Please alert the authorities immediately. Within a few days, you can acquire a copy of the accident report from the police station where the report was taken or from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. You can submit this evidence with your claim.
- Gather as much data as you can on possible witnesses. You must rapidly amass their names and phone numbers.
- Get checked out ASAP. Whether you are injured or not, you must get medical attention immediately.
- Your insurance carrier should be notified immediately. Do not accept settlements from other insurance providers without consulting a truck accident lawyer first.
Fatal Truck Accident Statistics
According to a report by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,965 persons died in the United States in heavy truck-related accidents in 2020. This represented a 1% decline from the 5,032 in 2019. In 2020, 71% of those killed in large-truck crashes were passengers in other cars and not in the trucks themselves.
Large trucks made up, on average, 8.9% of all the vehicles involved in fatal accidents nationwide in 2020. With 90 fatalities, California had the most significant number of nonoccupants in large-truck accidents.
More than 50 unoccupied victims of heavy truck accidents occurred only in two other states, Texas and Florida.
