Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A pedestrian’s vulnerability to traffic dangers is greater than any other road user, including motorists, motorcyclists, or cyclists combined. In the case of an accident, they are not adequately protected.

Sadly, pedestrian accidents have increased in recent years. There has been a 27 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities in the United States since 2007 despite a 14 percent decrease in other traffic-related fatalities.

In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrian fatalities in the United States. Experts believe that there is a fatality every 88 minutes. An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms in 2017 for injuries not fatally caused by collisions.

Children and the elderly are at the highest risk of suffering an injury or fatality while walking anywhere in California. Children under age 15 made up 39 percent of all pedestrian accidents, with nearly 10 percent of these cases resulting in fatalities.

Each week, roughly 2,400 children are injured when they are hit or run over by a car in a driveway, according to NHTSA data. Two of these children will be killed as a result of their injuries. Every year, backover accidents cause 42 percent of all non-traffic-related car deaths.

Parents must restrict their children from playing on driveways, unfenced yards, and parking lots, especially if they are under 12. Teach your child to walk with their back to oncoming traffic and as far to the left as feasible if you’re on the street without sidewalks.
