Bicycle Accident Statistics

When traveling small distances, more people are getting interested in riding bicycles. It’s primarily because bicycles are a low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative. Bicycle accidents, unfortunately, have been on the rise in recent years.

Between 2007 and 2018, 8,908 cyclists died in the United States. That number was multiplied by 12 to get the average. With 857 cyclists killed in 2018, 2018 was the bloodiest year.

Bicycle accidents in California have been on the rise over the years. Approximately 155 people were killed in fatal bicycle accidents in 2018.

Cyclist fatalities account for 4% of all auto accidents in California. This is more than double the national average, and it ranks California first in the country in terms of cyclist deaths.

There are various reasons why bicycle accidents occur. Drivers failing to yield the right of way, failing to check for bikes before pulling out, running a stop sign or a red light, and distracted driving is all common causes.
