What Should You Do After a Car Accident?

It is impossible to predict car accidents, but you can prepare for them. The checklist below will tell you what to do after an accident to protect your rights. Here’s what you need to do:

Ensure you’re safe first before checking with anyone. Stay on the scene and check on everyone.

    • Wait for the authorities in a safe place. Put disabled vehicles on the side of the road if you can. As a safety precaution, turn on your hazard lights.
    • Report your accident to 911. The officers will collect evidence, take statements, and create a report.
    • Exchange information with all parties involved. Take pictures of your injuries, the road conditions, the weather, and the vehicle that hit you.
    • Do not admit fault, not even to the police.
    • Tell the authorities the truth about what happened.
    • Get medical help. See your primary care doctor or specialist immediately. Early medical care can mitigate injuries.
    • Please report it to your insurance company. California insurers have a time limit for reporting an accident.
    • Talk to insurance adjusters. Only the necessary information must be shared during your conversation with the claims adjuster. Consult an attorney before making a recorded statement or accepting a settlement offer from an insurance company.
    • Keep a file containing all the essential documents about the accident, such as the police report, medical bills, other drivers’ information, and your treatment plan.
    • Seek immediate legal counsel from a renowned reckless accident attorney in California.
