Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
The majority of Californians use bicycles for transportation, exercise, and recreation, and they are well-versed in traffic and safety regulations.
It is the right of all cyclists in California to be able to travel the roads without fear. Unfortunately, there is a lack of mutual respect between the drivers of other vehicles on the road and the cyclists who use them.
California’s congested roads present particular challenges for cyclists. When sharing a traffic lane or riding in a dedicated bike lane, drivers of passenger cars, commercial trucks, and buses frequently fail to spot cyclists.
Bicycle deaths in California are the highest in the country. More than 400 cyclists died in California from 2016 to 2018 due to traffic accidents.
Many things can increase the risk of an accident for a cyclist, including weather and terrain, bike lanes, and the volume and speed of traffic in the area.
Helmets don’t prevent accidents, but they can significantly impact how a collision turns out. The risk of serious injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, is higher for not wearing a helmet.
