What To Do After A Car Accident

Although car accidents are unpredictable, everyone should be prepared for them. Keep a checklist in your car’s glove compartment to stay organized after an accident.

It can advise you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow the guidelines below.

  • Keep your cool and avoid blame. Stay focused on ensuring everyone’s safety. Examine yourself for injuries before assisting others.
  • Dial 911 to report your collision. Unless the crash was minor, with no injuries or property damage, call the police. Police question witnesses, gather evidence, and prepare a report about the incident.
  • Collect data from all parties involved. Take detailed notes about the incident, including the weather, road conditions, and any injuries you sustained.
  • Accepting fault under any circumstances, especially with the police, is unacceptable. Give the officer an honest account of what occurred.
  • Seek medical attention. Consult a specialist or your primary care physician. Receiving medical assistance as soon as possible can help reduce the severity of the injury.
  • Inform your insurance company. Accident reporting dates in California vary by insurance company.
  • Speak with a claims adjuster. You can call a claims adjuster if you have all the relevant information. You should not accept a settlement offer from an insurance company or consent to a recorded statement unless you have first spoken with a lawyer.
  • Create a file. Collect and save all pertinent documentation in a case file. This includes the police report, medical costs, and injury treatment plans.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a reputable California automobile accident attorney.
