According to the El Cajon Police Department, one person is dead and another injured after an arson suspect started a fire at an El Cajon residence on Friday, May 6, 2022.
The fire broke out in the El Cajon neighborhood around noon.
Court Services Deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a family-initiated eviction to a male resident who lived with his girlfriend at 1282 Redwood Ave. in El Cajon, according to a press release.
After receiving no response at the door, the deputies attempted to enter the house to complete the eviction. The deputies discovered the front door had been barricaded from the inside when they tried to open it. Several Molotov cocktail-like devices were thrown at the deputies at the same time, instantly engulfing the home in flames.
The suspect’s girlfriend is thought to be the woman who escaped the house. She had moderate burns that were not life threatening, and she confirmed that the suspect was still inside the house.
ECPD were able to search the burned down home after the fire was put out and discovered the burned remains of an individual in one of the home’s bathrooms.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the male suspect who started the fire died in the house or not.
The house was determined to be a total loss, and the fire caused no damage to neighboring structures or property.
At this time, the ECPD is not looking for any outstanding suspects, and there is no threat to the public.
Fatal Burn Injury Statistics
Every year in the United States, 1.1 million burn injuries necessitate medical attention (American Burn Association, 2002). Approximately 4,500 of them die. Burn-related infections kill up to 10,000 people in the United States each year.
Burns are an unfortunate part of life. Burn injuries claim the lives of one person every three hours in the United States, accounting for about 1.5 deaths per 100,000 people, or about 2.1 percent of all fatal injuries.
Burn injuries are not only excruciatingly painful, but they also take a long time to heal and can leave both emotional and physical scarring.
Burn victims frequently experience long-term emotional consequences, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or nightmares about the incident. They may be hesitant to resume normal activities for fear of sustaining another burn injury.
