According to police, a suspected drunk driver was injured after smashing into a Richmond police officer’s motorcycle near the I-80 freeway on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
According to police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy, the crash occurred on Saturday at Amador Street and Solano Avenue, just off the I-80 freeway.
The car collided with the officer’s motorcycle at a high rate of speed, but fortunately, no one was killed.
The officer had pulled over another driver for speeding.
According to the police statement, the intoxicated driver had a felony DUI warrant out for his arrest and was also on probation for DUI and provided a breath alcohol sample on the scene that was more than three times the legal limit.
Pomeroy said a 34-year-old Richmond resident who police said was driving the car was arrested Sunday and was being held in jail.
His identity was withheld by police because he had not yet been charged.
Pomeroy stated he is facing significant jail time.
The motorcycle was badly mangled in photos posted by police.
According to Pomeroy, when the motorcycle rammed into the car of the motorist who the officer had pulled over, the 34-year-old man suffered minor injuries.
It is unclear if the motorist had been taken to the hospital.
DUI Accident Statistics
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable to traffic-related injuries and fatalities when crossing the street. They are the most at risk because they have no safeguards to protect them in the event of a catastrophic accident.
In recent years, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States has increased significantly. Between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 27%, while the number of other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%.
A drunk driver was unable to give an innocent pedestrian the right of way in this case. It is a crime to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, drunk driving collisions occur frequently in the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 30 Americans lose their lives each day as a result of drunk driving accidents. In the United States, drunk driving is responsible for approximately 29% of all motor vehicle accident deaths. Of these drivers, 61% are found to be over the legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC).
