What Should You Do After a Car Accident?

Car accidents are frightening events that leave you terrified and unsure of what to do next. However, protecting your health and legal rights after a collision is critical. Following these steps after an accident will help you stay calm, gather the necessary information, and seek compensation for your injuries. Here’s what to do.

  • Keep your cool and ensure everyone is safe. Check for injuries before looking for others.
  • To ensure your safety, move disabled vehicles to the side of the road if possible. Installing emergency flashers can help you avoid future collisions. Find a secure location to wait for the police.
  • Call 911 to report your accident. Unless there are no injuries or property damage, your crash should be reported to the police. Authorities can record the incident, gather facts, and incorporate them into an official document to document it.
  • Assume you are in an accident. Exchange contact information with the other driver(s). Photograph cars, license plates, and other relevant facts.
  • You must not admit failure. Never, ever admit fault to anyone, including the authorities. Concentrate on the facts when speaking with a police officer. Describe the collision as thoroughly as possible.
  • Do not delay seeking immediate medical attention. Please get in touch with your primary care physician or the hospital’s emergency department. Immediate medical attention can help reduce the severity of the situation. Internal injuries that do not cause symptoms can be detected using tests.
  • Notify your insurance company. Most insurance companies have deadlines for reporting accidents. Call as soon as possible and follow the agent’s instructions to register your accident.
  • Contact insurance adjusters. The other party’s insurance company may contact you on the day of the accident. Don’t give the claims adjuster more information than necessary. Consult an attorney before making a statement or accepting an insurance payout.
  • Keep accident-related files organized and together. Documents concerning the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, information about the other driver, and injury treatment programs, should be kept in your file.
