An unidentified 89-year-old man was killed after colliding head-on with 40-year-old Ashley C. and veering off the road into the opposite lane facing oncoming traffic on Highway 111 Monday, May 9, 2022.
The fatal crash occurred on a Monday on Highway 111 south of Heber Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The name of the driver has yet to be disclosed by the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Division.
According to CHP, he had a passenger Elena G., 84, who suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center by REACH Air.
Raul Canizales, a Calexico firefighter and EMT, said his department was called to help Castillo get out of her car.
According to the CHP, Castillo suffered serious injuries and was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center by Mercy Air.
A car collided with Castillo shortly after the first collision. Carlos J., the driver of the third vehicle, was not injured, according to the CHP.
The main cause of the crash, according to CHP Public Information Officer Arturo Platero, was a wrong-way driver, and the drivers’ speeds were unknown.
