The California Highway Patrol confirms one person died in a crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria on Monday.
The collision caused one of the vehicles to overturn multiple times, crossing over the center divider and landing in the southbound lanes.
CHP says the driver of the vehicle that overturned, a 68-year-old man from Nipomo, was taken to the hospital where he died. His name has not yet been released.
The driver of the other vehicle was reportedly uninjured.
An unidentified man was killed following a deadly rollover collision in Santa Maria on Monday morning, May 9, 2022.
The accident happened at approximately 9:45 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 and Main Street in Santa Maria.
According to the CHP, a 2007 Nissan 350Z was heading northbound on Highway 101 in the left lane adjacent to a 2002 Honda CRV in the middle lane.
Both vehicles collided because of an unsafe lane change, causing the Honda CRV to overturn many times and eventually go over the median wall between the northbound and southbound lanes.
According to CalTrans, the two right lanes of southbound 101 were blocked until roughly 11:10 a.m.
The Honda driver was rushed to Marian Regional Medical Center, but he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
An active investigation of the mishap is currently underway.
Rollover Crash Statistics
When a vehicle’s stability on the road is compromised, it might flip over and cause a rollover accident. Because some cars may roll over several times, these accidents can result in significant injuries and death.
Car accidents involving rollovers are common, and they often result in significant injuries and even fatalities for the occupants of the afflicted vehicles and their drivers and passengers.
The NHTSA estimates that rollover crashes kill 30 percent of people inside a passenger car when it comes to deaths. Light truck rollovers account for 47 percent of light truck occupant deaths, compared to 22 percent of passenger car occupant deaths.
In both single-vehicle and multiple-vehicle rollover accidents, speeding is one of the most common causes. Vehicles involved in high-speed collisions may roll over, trapping or ejecting their occupants, or tip over and roll to the side.
Make sure everyone in the car is strapped up at all times in the case of a rollover accident. To avoid the risk of turning over, you should drive significantly slower around corners than you would on straights. Maintain constant vigilance over the road’s condition, as it can quickly turn slick or icy.
