Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics

Tens of thousands of drivers and passengers are killed each year on American roads. It was reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) that 36,560 persons died in fatal car accidents in 2018.
Crossing paths with another vehicle while moving in opposing directions is a “head-on collision.” Crash outcomes can be life-threatening or fatal, even at moderate speeds.

Traffic lights, stop signs, blind crossings, and motorways are where head-on crashes are most likely to occur. Drivers who disregard traffic rules, such as red lights or stop signs, are more likely to cause head-on collisions at intersections.

When two cars collide head-on, the force of the collision is magnified by their speed and weight. When two moving objects collide, a tremendous quantity of energy is unleashed. This kind of impact is more likely to be lethal due to the increased kinetic energy.

Even though just 2% of accidents result in a head-on collision, this type of collision is responsible for 10% of all highway deaths in the United States.
Passing into oncoming traffic is always a bad idea unless it’s an emergency. It’s a major reason why head-on collisions happen. Use your seat belt to help lower your chances of serious injury in a car accident.

Every time you get into your car, make sure your head restraints and seatbacks are in a comfortable, safe position.
