Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

The number of car accidents in the United States has risen in recent years. In 2018, 33,654 people were killed in automobile accidents. Car accidents claimed the lives of 36,560 people.

Car accidents are common on the state’s large and congested highways. Every year, high-speed driving and truck accidents kill a large number of people on California’s roads.

Because of the state’s large population, there are many more drivers on the road, potentially increasing the number of auto accidents.

There was a significant increase in fatal crashes between 2014 and 2016. However, there were minor ups and downs from 2017 to 2020. The number of motor vehicle deaths in California has increased by 5%, from 3,540 in 2019 to 3,723 in 2020.

According to an OTS poll, 57% of California residents believe it is acceptable to drive 10 miles per hour faster than the posted speed limit on the state’s freeways. Nearly 40% of those polled believed they would not be fined if they exceeded the speed limit by ten miles per hour.

Distracted driving is a serious public safety risk that must be avoided at all costs. Victims of personal injury must hold distracted drivers accountable for their actions. Distracted drivers are not always charged criminally because prosecuting a distracted driver is more difficult than prosecuting a drunk driver.
