[05-15-2022] San Diego County, CA - Multiple Pedestrian Injured by Reckless Driver in CarlsbadA Washington man was arrested on suspicion of hitting and injuring multiple people with his vehicle in Carlsbad Sunday, May 15, 2022.

According to the police, the collision occurred early Sunday morning in the North County parking lot in San Diego, then fleeing the area.

In a news release, Carlsbad Police Sgt. Jim Willis said that John Jason G., 19, was arrested at a motel in Escondido.

Investigators believe he got into a fight near a local shopping center at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, then drove into two separate crowds of pedestrians.

Martinez-Gutierrez hit an unknown number of people, according to Willis.

Four people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Martinez-Gutierrez, of Spokane, Washington, was arrested shortly after 6:30 p.m. and booked into the Vista Detention Center. According to jail records, he was arrested on Tuesday and is not currently eligible for bail. He’s been charged with five felonies, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Willis stated that police are still investigating the incident to determine what caused the initial conflict.
